Drug Treatment Equity

Standing on the frontlines of a state-funded drug treatment facility, I poured my energy into counseling offenders and their families. I was deeply enthusiastic and driven by a genuine desire to make a difference. However, the reality on the ground was grueling. The work was demanding, and the patients—mostly there under court orders or law enforcement mandates—were rarely cooperative. For the most part, they just wanted to clock in their required hours and check off their sentencing boxes. That perspective shifted dramatically when I was invited to a well-known private treatment facility for a workshop on treating teenage offenders. Walking through their doors, my remaining enthusiasm began to fade as I took in the stark disparities: private rooms, high-end furnishings, state-of-the-art therapy spaces, and immaculate cleanliness. From that day on, I couldn't shake a haunting question: Why is there such a massive gap in drug offender care? It laid bare an unsettling reality—the vast disparity not only in patient resources, but also in the compensation and working environments of caseworkers who were performing essentially the same vital service to humanity.
